Support Staff

Support Roles
Cover Supervisor
Cover Supervisors work in the secondary school / college sector. A cover supervisor is used to cover the short term absence of a teacher.  This might be a planned absence but can also occur unexpectedly.  Cover supervisors therefore need to be flexible, adaptable and able to demonstrate maturity and judgement on occasions.  You will need to be someone who can empathise with  and relate easily to students and young persons. You will be expected to:
  • Engage with, and respond to, any questions from pupils.
  •  Supervise work set by a teacher.
  •  Collect completed work from pupils and report back as appropriate, in line with school policies and procedures.
  • Deal with any immediate problems or emergencies according to school policy and procedure.
  • Manage pupil behaviour and report back on this, and any issues that may have have arisen, using the school's procedures.
  •  Be comfortable with finding yourself the only adult in the classroom situation

Teaching Assistant
Teaching assistants can work in either the secondary or primary sector. They often work with small groups or an individual pupil. You will be expected to:
  •  Support pupil learning, individually or in groups.
  • Demonstrate  flexibility whilst working  alongside the teacher to optimise learning.
  • Provide feedback to the teacher as requested.
  • Usually,  you will be working alongside a teacher in the classroom situation.
